Science awards, prizes & scholarships
The Melbourne Graduate School of Science offers a range of prizes and awards across graduate programs and disciplines to Australian and international students. These awards and prizes provide support for living costs, research, travel, local and international conference attendance and periods of overseas study. Some funds such as the 'David Hay Memorial Fund' provide financial assistance for writing thesis and publication of work in journals.
Graduate Science National Scholarships
In 2012, the Melbourne Graduate School of Science is offering a number of $10,000 scholarships (paid pro-rata over the course of the degree) to high-achieving Master of Science students enrolled in the Botany, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Genetics, Mathematics and Statistics, Physics, Vision Sciences, and Zoology streams.
Six $10,000 scholarships (two per degree, paid pro-rata over the course of the degree) are also available to local students entering the Doctor of Optometry, Master of Biotechnology and the Master of Operations Research and Management Science programs.
Selection is based on academic merit and each department is allocated a limited number of scholarships. To be eligible students are required to submit a complete course application by the advertised timely closing dates. Students will be automatically assessed and no separate scholarship application is necessary. Students will be notified once commencement data is finalised and payments are made after semester census dates.
Department of Optometry & Vision Sciences scholarships - new in 2012
The Department of Optometry & Vision Sciences is offering $6000 scholarships to Master of Science (Vision Sciences) students commencing in 2012.
The scholarship is available to full-time Master of Science students who are not in receipt of any other scholarships over $4000 per annum in value. It will be paid in three instalments of $2000 each, at the end of semesters 1, 2 and 3 - provided they have a GPA of 70% or more from their undergraduate studies and maintain it in each corresponding semester.
Department of Mathematics and Statistics scholarships - new in 2012
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics is offering $6000 scholarships to Master of Science (Mathematics and Statistics) students commencing in 2012.
The scholarship is available to full-time Master of Science (Mathematics and Statistics) students who are not in receipt of any other scholarships over $4000 per annum in value. It will be paid in three instalments of $2000 each, at the end of semesters 1, 2 and 3 - provided a GPA of 75 or more is maintained throughout your studies.
Commonwealth Supported Places
A student with a Commonwealth Supported Place has their tuition fees subsidised by the Australian Government. You will pay contributions by subject according to discipline categories. More information can be found on the Commonwealth supported places web page.

Master of Science - A national priority
As part of the Federal Governments' focus on education, Master of Science subjects in the natural and physical sciences, and mathematics and statistics have been listed as a national priority area.
Students entering the Master of Science programs need to check the banding classification of specific subjects, as those not in the natural and physical sciences, mathematics and statistics fee band will have different fee levels. In addition, the University of Melbourne will be offering over 200 Commonwealth Supported Places into the Master of Science for 2011, indicating it is an excellent time to study science at the University of Melbourne.
Youth Allowance, Austudy & Abstudy
Students enrolled in any full-time masters-level coursework program may be eligible to apply for student income support payments such as Youth Allowance, Austudy or Abstudy.
FEE-HELP loans for Australian fee places
FEE-HELP is a loan given to eligible fee paying students to help pay part or all of their tuition fees. In 2012, the FEE-HELP limit is $89,706 (unless a student is undertaking a medicine, dentistry or veterinary science course, in which case the FEE-HELP limit is $112,134). The FEE-HELP limit is indexed on 1 January each year.
FEE-HELP loans are provided by the Commonwealth Government and are repaid through the tax system once your income is above the minimum threshold for compulsory repayment. Debts accrued under FEE-HELP will be indexed to the consumer price index (CPI) but are otherwise interest fee.
Once the maximum of FEE-HELP loan has been reached, up-front payments will apply for any subsequent fee-based study at undergraduate or graduate levels. Visit the Government's 'Going to uni' website for more information. More information about Australian fee places.

International Postgraduate Coursework Awards (IPCA)
A limited number of 25% fee remission awards, plus a A$10,000 stipend^ to assist with living expenses, will be available for international students enrolling in the following programs in 2012:
- Doctor of Optometry (4 awards)
- Master of Biotechnology (2 awards)
- Master of Operations Research and Management Science (2 awards)
- Master of Science (6 awards. Eligible streams: Botany, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Genetics, Mathematics and Statistics, Physics, Vision Sciences, and Zoology)
You do not need to apply for IPCA separately - all international students commencing in one of the courses mentioned above on a full-fee paying basis will be considered automatically. Successful applicants will be notified in early February 2012.

^ Payment of the A$10,000 stipend will be spread out over the duration of the course: A$5,000 per annum over two years for the Master of Science, Master of Biotechnology and Master of Operations Research and Management Science; and A$2500 per annum over four years for the Doctor of Optometry).

Queen's College Graduate Scholarships
Queen's offers a scholarship to a full-time student studying for a Master's degree within one of the Graduate Schools at the University of Melbourne and who accepts an offer of residency in the College. Selection of the successful applicant is based on academic criteria and an interview process.
In 2011 the Graduate scholarship is valued at $4,000 and is equally divided as a reduction of fees for both semesters in the same calendar year. The Graduate scholarship is granted yearly.
In addition to the scholarship, Graduate students are eligible for paid roles as tutors, mentors and duty officers. They may also apply for a financial assistance bursary. All graduate students at Queen?s are members of the Middle Common Room.

Queen's College Casual Resident Tutors for 2011
The College is seeking to fill vacancies in its residential tutorial team. The team provides academic support for a vibrant community totalling 220 undergraduates.
Applicants should be academically strong, well-acquainted with current University of Melbourne courses, skilled in small-group teaching, and committed to collegial life.
Pastoral and academic mentors to the College's first year cohort are drawn mainly from resident tutors.
Available positions require appointees to live in the College from February to November with the possibility of on-going employment in 2012. Preference will be given to graduates and postgraduates in the fields of Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Politics, Psychology, Literature, French and Accounting.

Trinity College Graduate Scholarships
Trinity College offers up to 15 graduate residential scholarships across all disciplines for students studying at the University of Melbourne who apply successfully for residential place at the College.
Value in 2011: Half fee remission, valued at approximately $11,000.
Duration: One year, renewable subject to satisfactory performance.
Criteria: Scholarships are offered on a competitive basis among all applicants for residence in the College. High academic achievement, admirable personal qualities and a commitment to the communal ideals of the College are essential. Students with demonstrated financial need will be preferred if all other criteria are met equally.
Other Information: All graduate students are also eligible to apply for financial assistance and may be considered for paid tutorial teaching.
