Local students

Commonwealth Supported Places

A student with a Commonwealth Supported Place has their tuition fees subsidised by the Australian Government. You will pay contributions by subject according to discipline categories. More information can be found on the Commonwealth supported places web page.

The following programs have CSP places:

Youth Allowance, Austudy & Abstudy

Students enrolled in any full-time masters-level coursework program may be eligible to apply for student income support payments such as Youth Allowance, Austudy or Abstudy.

Master of Science - A national priority

As part of the Federal Governments' focus on education, Master of Science subjects in the natural and physical sciences, and mathematics and statistics have been listed as a national priority area.

Students entering the Master of Science programs need to check the banding classification of specific subjects as those not in the natural and physical sciences, mathematics and statistics fee band will have different fee levels as displayed on Commonwealth supported places page.

In addition, the University of Melbourne will be offering over 200 Commonwealth Supported Places into the Master of Science for 2011, indicating it is an excellent time to study science at the University of Melbourne.

Master of Science national scholarships

For 2011, the Melbourne Graduate School of Science is offering up to fifty $10,000 scholarships (paid pro-rata over the course of the degree) to high achieving Master of Science students majoring in the Botany, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Genetics, Information Systems, Mathematics & Statistics, Physics, Vision Sciences, and Zoology programs.

Four $10,000 scholarships (two per degree) are available to local students entering the Biotechnology & Management Science graduate programs.

To be eligible for consideration, students will need to achieve a H1 (80+) average in their major (or equivalent) and submit a complete course application by 30 November 2010. Students will be automatically assessed and no separate scholarship application is necessary. Students will be notified once commencement data is finalised and payments are made after semester census dates.

Graduate Access Melbourne

International students

International Postgraduate Coursework Awards (IPCA)

Four 50% fee remission awards will be available for international students enrolling in the Master of Science in Semester 1 2011. To be considered, applicants must submit a course application by 31 October 2010 and subsequently receive an unconditional course offer as a new international student at the University of Melbourne. New Generation International Graduate Awards

These awards are available to high-achieving eligible students who have an unconditional Semester 1, 2011 course offer for the Master of Science and Master of Information Systems

Trinity College Graduate Scholarships

Trinity College offers up to 15 graduate residential scholarships across all disciplines for students studying at the University of Melbourne who apply successfully for residential place at the College.

Value in 2011: Half fee remission, valued at approximately $11,000.

Duration: One year, renewable subject to satisfactory performance.

Criteria: Scholarships are offered on a competitive basis among all applicants for residence in the College. High academic achievement, admirable personal qualities and a commitment to the communal ideals of the College are essential. Students with demonstrated financial need will be preferred if all other criteria are met equally.

Other Information: All graduate students are also eligible to apply for financial assistance and may be considered for paid tutorial teaching.

Science awards, prizes & scholarships

The Melbourne Graduate School of Science offers a range of prizes and awards across graduate programs and disciplines to Australian and international students. These awards and prizes provide support for living costs, research, travel, local and international conference attendance and periods of overseas study. Some funds such as the 'David Hay Memorial Fund' provide financial assistance for writing thesis and publication of work in journals.
