Research project, find a supervisor
Programs such as Master of Science*, Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) require a supervisor for the research project, so please make contact with a supervisor prior to your application. To assist in this process, please refer to the University's Find an Expert researcher database or the Science Departments & Schools page.
Master of Science streams requiring prearranged supervision include: Botany, Biomedical and Health Sciences, Earth Sciences, Genetics, Geography, Physics, Vision Sciences, and Zoology. Whilst Chemistry, Information Systems and Mathematics and Statistics do not require a supervisor to be confirmed, they still encourage students to make contact with potential supervisors.

Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) applicants should refer to information for research students for specific course and scholarship application information, including application closing dates.
Applicants with a weighted average mark of 80% or higher in the prerequisite undergraduate major are eligible to apply for the Research Training Program in Science. This is a five-year course of study comprising the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).

Before you start the online application process, we encourage you to visit the Future Students website. Information on this page will help you successfully submit your application for a course at the University of Melbourne and we strongly advise that you read this information carefully prior to commencing the online application process.
Please ensure that you have submitted a complete online application form. This includes:
- Agreeing to the terms and conditions
- International students must ensure they have paid their A$100 application fee
- Completing all sections of the online application process
- Supplying all relevant supporting documentation
- Providing written confirmation of supervision if required (email correspondence accepted)
Once you have successfully submitted a complete application a confirmation email will be sent to your preferred email account. If you do not receive this email, please log back into your Online Application and try to submit it again.
Outcomes
Graduate coursework applications typically take 4 weeks and research higher degree applications typically take 4-6 weeks for an outcome to be reached. You can check the status of your application, change your application preferences, withdraw your application, or lodge an application for a different course, by logging back into the Online Application system using the username and password emailed to you when you first applied.
English language requirements
If you are a University of Melbourne student please select the English Language Institution as your option in this category.
Preferences
You can apply for more than one Melbourne Graduate School of Science program, by indicating your preferences in your online application. Please note that if you are applying for multiple programs, your lower preferences will only be assessed if your first preference is not successful.
Fee type
If you are applying for a Commonwealth Supported Place, you will automatically be considered for an Australian Fee Place in the same course if your CSP application is not successful. It is not necessary to lodge separate applications for each fee type.
